My name is Ashley and I live in Tucson, AZ.

I am a firm believer in the fact that our lives are short and it is important to enjoy the simple things around us. I've designed this blog to be somewhat of a collage of my life and to showcase things that I love.

Enjoy!

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I could not put this book down! Krakauer describes his experience with climbing Mount Everest during the spring of ‘96 in which 12 people died, several of which he knew personally. From the day Krakauer set out on the journey I was amazed at how painstakingly long it takes for someone to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. I was even more amazed at why anyone in their right mind would even attempt it…

The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received this book from a good friend who was a Women’s Studies major… she had a lot classic feminist literature and I was very interested in taking it off her hands. With my interest in both being an independent female and working in mental health, this book really resonated with me. It has been several days since I finished reading it and I am still thinking about the main character (who was basically Plath herself). It made me think of how tragic it is that as females, we are held up to different standards than our male counterparts and ideally, are expected to fill more social roles as well. This must have left Plath feeling empty and hopeless and her mental state was not strong enough to bear that burden in her mid-20s. The Bell Jar followed her journey through the eyes of ‘Esther Greenwood’ very closely as she went in and out of different psychiatric hospitals in the late 50s. I loved this book and would definitely read it again.

Matador Travel

One of my BFFs (Mia) sent me this link a while back and it has become one of my favorite sites to check everyday. The site is comprised of short stories and articles submitted by people with a passion for travel. Everyday there are new postings relating to all aspects of travel and tend to be written from the perspective of individuals interested in low-budget, sustainable, global-citizen type traveling. On Matador, you aren’t going to find any information on 5 star hotels or the nicest place to stay in London. What you will find are articles the might explain slang in different languages, etiquette for hostels around the world or how to fund your next backpacking adventure through Southeast Asia.

"Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar. Caminante no hay camino sino estelas en la mar."

- From a very inspirational poem by Antonio Machado that I have always loved.

For my birthday, my parents got me a ticket to go back to Antigua, Guatemala for 10 days!! I am beyond excited and so thankful to them for such a generous gift.

I have to say that when they first came out, I equated TOMS with Crocs… UGLY, UGLY, UGLY. A few weeks ago, I was at a breast cancer fundraiser and the event was cosponsored by TOMS. I took a peek at what they represented and saw some folks in the vicinity sportin’ some of the shoes. I have to admit, I started to think they were kinda cute. I thought about them and tried some on. Then I thought about them a bit more and finally broke down and purchased my first pair. Now I am obsessed! If you haven’t tried them yet you must! They are incredibly comfortable and represent an excellent cause. If you haven’t already done so, I say TRY ‘EM!
